The Fossil Record: A Thorny Problem for Millions of Years

Saturday, December 27, 2025

One of the most profound "silent witnesses" in the debate over the age of the earth is the presence of thorns in the fossil record. To many, a fossilized thorn may seem like a minor detail, but for the biblical worldview, it carries immense theological weight.

According to the book of Genesis, thorns and thistles were not part of the original "very good" creation. They were a specific consequence of the Fall—a physical manifestation of the curse placed upon the ground due to man’s rebellion.

“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.” (Genesis 3:17-18)

The Implications of "Old" Thorns

The conflict arises when we look at the standard evolutionary timeline. Evolutionary paleontologists claim to find fossilized thorns in rock layers (such as the Devonian strata) that they date to be over 400 million years old.

If these dates are correct, it means thorns—and the death and decay they represent—existed for hundreds of millions of years before man ever walked the earth. This creates a massive theological dilemma:

  • If thorns came before man, then God’s statement in Genesis 3 is incorrect. He could not "bring forth" thorns as a new curse if they had already been around for eons.
  • If thorns were part of the "very good" creation, then the "curse" was not a change in the physical world, but merely a change in how man interacted with it—a view that many believe softens the gravity of sin's impact on the cosmos.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” (Romans 5:12)

The Evidence of a Fallen Nature

Creationists point out that thorns, botanically speaking, are often degenerative structures. They are frequently "mutant" or undeveloped leaves and branches that fail to grow properly. This aligns perfectly with the biblical description of a world in "bondage to decay."

Finding these structures in the fossil record doesn't prove the earth is millions of years old; rather, it suggests that these layers were laid down after the Fall. Specifically, most creationists argue that these fossils were formed during the Global Flood of Noah, a catastrophic event that buried a world already suffering under the effects of the curse.

The Crown of Thorns: The Ultimate Answer

The presence of thorns in history is not just a scientific puzzle; it is a pointer to the Gospel. When Jesus Christ was led to the cross, the Roman soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head.

“And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29)

There is a beautiful, heavy irony in this: the very symbol of the curse (the thorns) was placed upon the brow of the Creator. He literally wore the consequence of our sin so that He could pay the price to remove it. If thorns are just a natural byproduct of millions of years of evolution, this symbolism loses its power. But if thorns are the mark of the curse, then Christ wearing them shows He is the one who has taken the curse upon Himself.

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13)
